Wanted: One Agent or Manager

Like all screenwriters, I’ve dreamed about the day I’d land an agent ever since I started writing scripts. In my mind, the question has never been if I would ever get an agent, but when. Some years ago I’d have said, “not quite yet.” These days, the answer is “soon!”

I’ve been a very good girl. Until now I’ve left the marketing alone and concentrated instead on developing my skills, building a portfolio, and making contacts in the industry. Now that I’ve laid the groundwork and established my credentials, I feel well equipped to shift into marketing mode. Like any new adventure, it's simultaneously exciting and scary. I plan to document my journey in this blog, both to help me stay motivated and on track and to share my experiences with other writers.

I'd love to hear from others who have blazed this trail before me. Any advice? Any difficult lessons learned along the way? Spread the wisdom!

I wish you lots of luck! It's even harder for composers. Even when you do land an agent (and they won't even talk to you until you've won a major fest), they're busy concentrating on their A list composers first, and you still have to find your own work. I've always liked doing my own marketing, it's a nice contrast to the creative side I harness when I'm writing music.

I'm well aware that I'll have to continue to do my own marketing. But it does help to have an agent, especially when I'm so far away. I'm working to get to the point where you are: enjoying marketing. It's true that it's a contrast to the creative mode. It actually forces you to get out from behind your computer and talk to people. Wow, what a head trip!

NEVER before in my life did I enjoy the concept of marketing, and when I jumped into the pool it was the thing I dreaded the most. I'm actually surprised that I enjoy it, I think it has more to do with seeing something through all the way from conception to completion. Although, for the record, I hate "networking" events and phone conversations where I have to sell myself. Actually, most phone conversations. If I could conduct all business by email and one-on-one meetings I'd be a happy man.

I forgot about the distance hurdle for you, an agent would be a big help in expediting work in the US. If your screenwriting is anything like the sample from your book, you shouldn't have any problem landing one.
