Buddy Up

A screenwriting friend and I are more or less the same point in our careers. We're confident in our writing skills, have done the groundwork, and are ready to advance to the next level. We also both live many miles from LA, so sometimes mustering the energy to keep knocking on doors is more than a little frustrating. We decided to partner up and act as each other's marketing buddy.

The way it works is every other Sunday, Susannah and I get on Skype (we also live many miles from each other). We  talk about our goals, the actions we've taken toward them, and the necessary next steps in the process. For example, I have a goal of signing with an agent and/or manager. I'm looking in LA and in the UK. What have I done so far? Researched 17 UK agencies that sound promising. Three of these sound like especially good fits. My next step? To get referrals to those three agencies. In helping me come up with ways to accomplish this, Susannah reminded me of a director we both know in the UK. BING! Great idea...

Susannah and I also hatched a plan to make a joint trip to LA in June. By pooling contacts and resources, together we'll accomplish more than we would alone.

Suddenly, my energy level is way up.

We Skype again in two weeks time. Between now and then I have several tasks on my to-do list, not least of which is  finishing my rewrite! So if I'm not blogging much these days, it's because I'm writing. And it's going well.

Congrats on all the writing. I think "buddying" up is a great idea, have someone to bounce ideas off of and keep you inspired is a huge boost. Keep us all posted on your progress!
